5 tips for making the most out of your Thanksgiving holiday

Enjoy your stay with us while visiting Rapid City and the Black Hills!

Ah the holiday’s. A time for gathering, family events, and being surrounded by the ones you love. For some, the holidays can result in a stressful time. To make your Thanksgiving as stress-free as possible, read about our five tips on how to truly enjoy your family holiday.

Letting go of the picture perfect holiday:

It’s easy to get wrapped up in the idea of having the picture perfect holiday. Your family all sitting around in matching pajamas, playing games or watching movies while sharing stories of your childhood. Letting go of this ideal can actually lead to some pretty great family memories. When you hold onto the idea that everything needs to be perfectly done, we lose sight of what matters most. Embrace the silly candid photos, the bed hair, and the arguments over who knows the rules better.

Plan activities ahead of time:

Having activities to entertain your guests during Thanksgiving can free up your own agenda to sit and relax once and awhile. Instead of hearing ‘I’m bored’ from the grand kids, you will hear ‘What are we doing next?’. From holiday shopping at Main Street Square to the Festival of Lights parade, there is always plenty to do in that Black Hills.

Don’t go overboard with indulgence:

Many look at the holidays as the perfect excuse to eat and drink as much as possible. While this can seem gratifying in the moment, there can be consequences to over indulgence. Enjoying holiday sweets and your favorite drink in moderation will curb the effects of over eating and make your family gatherings more enjoyable.

Remain grateful:

Remembering to be grateful during the holidays, especially Thanksgiving, can help you stay carefree and appreciative of your family members. Taking a moment to flip the script and think of why you are grateful for that annoying cousin versus how much you wish they would leave will go a long way during your time together.

Keep expectations realistic:

At the end of the day, it’s important to keep your expectations for the holidays realistic. No one, not even those Instagram stars, have a picture perfect holiday. They have arguments, drink too much, get bored and feel over worked. The key is to take stock of what you have and enjoy the little moments while letting go of the rest.
